Getting Car Parts from Scrap Vehicles

Vehicles that have been scrapped can be a good source of parts for other vehicles. It depends on why they have been scrapped – often engines and components will not really be of any use as they will be old and often malfunctioning. For spare body part though, scrapyards can be a good place to get hold of the parts required. You will need to weigh up the cost and the quality before you make any decisions. For example, if you need a new windscreen wiper, you might well be able to find a second hand one in a scrapyard. However, it would probably be quite cheap to buy a new one and it would last you longer. For things like car doors and large body parts, you are going...

What Happens if you Need a New Alternator?

Alternators are parts that are used in cars to charge the battery and power up all electrical systems. They come into use when the car engine is switched on, having replaced the older style dynamos and commutators that used to be used in vehicles. They have many advantages over dynamos and commutators, including their weight, price and durability. Sometimes, alternators will need to be replaced. This can happen with very little warning, though there may be some indications. Headlights could start pulsating, you may smell burning or there may be an indicator light on your dashboard. Luckily, replacing an alternator is quite cheap and relatively easy. You can buy parts online and have them delivered or you can take your car to a garage. If you decide you are able...

Run-Flat Tyres – Are They Worth The Money?

Run-flat tyres can support the weight of a vehicle for a short time, providing the driver with roughly 100 miles of range to find a repair shop. While it may sound like the perfect solution, car owners and car shoppers should know about the issues with this type of tyre because it certainly isn’t perfect. Although run-flat tyre enables you to keep driving about 100 miles after all the air has gone, one issue we’ve noticed is that people were replacing their run-flat tyres an average of 6,000 miles sooner than owners using standard tyres. Even though the tyre can support the vehicle without air, a sudden deflation results in less weight transfer and tread destabilisation, and you also have to bear in mind that if you fail notice the...

Clean Your Exhaust

When cleaning the exhaust tip, we recommend using a degreaser and a metal polish. To start off, soak the tips with the degreaser and let the chemicals work its magic. Use a cleaning brush after a few minutes and start cleaning inside and outside the exhaust tip. After you’ve dried it off, it’s time to polish the exhaust. For this we recommend you polish using a steel wool for the first polish and then a microfiber cloth for the second.

The Importance of Wheel Alignment

To ensure a car drives safely, efficiently and behaves as the vehicle manufacturer intended, it’s important that its wheels are correctly aligned. However, through everyday driving, or factors such as hitting a kerb or a pothole, the wheels can become misaligned, bringing a host of tyre related problems. During an alignment check, the car’s suspension geometry settings will be measured against the vehicle manufacturer’srecommendations. If the car’s actual settings are outside of the recommendations, it may be necessary to carry out some adjustment work and return the vehicle to its original settings, ensuring maximum safety and driver comfort.
