Uneven Tyre Wear

Regular checks of your tyres are a good idea for a number of reasons, not least keeping on the right side of the law regarding the tread depth. Spotting uneven wear on your tyres can indicate a number of issues and spotting such wear early can save you money. A good step to avoid uneven wear is to rotate your tyres every 6,000 miles. Before rotating your tyres you need to check how your wheels are driven as this affects how they should be rotated. Never mix different types of tyre construction on the same axle or have cross ply on the rear and radial on the front, this is illegal as it can adversely affect the handling of your vehicle.

If you have serious uneven wear on the tyre then rotation may not be an option, in this case it’s important to diagnose and rectify the cause. Wear in the centre of the tread is a sign of over inflation, while wear on the outside of the tread (on both sides) is a sign of under inflation, both of which should be easily rectifiable. Wear on one side of the tyre could indicate some problem with the wheel alignment or suspension and will need specialist attention.
